The Los Angeles Workers Center is a small community center that provides educational and cultural activities which promote the well-being of workers and their families. As part of a new initiative to create a small community garden, the Workers Center wanted a fencing-type that was welcoming yet covered the potential blight from future planted crops and herbs.The Workers Center is tucked away between a multi-story housing complex, an auto repair shop and is fenced off from the gated housing community it shares its street with. It is partially shaded throughout the day with the exception of the north lawn patch; which is exposed to sunlight most of the day.

With a limited budget, the project uses typical wooden posts, 1/4” Plywood, and Sun-Screen Shading cloth to create a processional experience that leads the community from the street level to the entrance of the building. The plywood acts as a paint-able surface which would be incorporated into the already existing art workshops that are held for the community. These painted surfaces work as a way to promote themselves to the rest of the community, while their angled placement obscures the views into the gardening area when entering the Workers Center. The sun-screen shading cloth, which can easily be found at any local gardening store, helps in obscuring the views while providing additional shading for certain plants as well as netting for climbing plants if they ever decide to grow them. At a low cost, these pieces create a unique system which promotes the community center in various ways while building a barrier from the potential blight.
